Her performance is quite understated, but along with Richard E Grant she steals the show. Dawn French is perhaps the biggest name, stepping into a Stephen Fry-shaped hole, and she does a brilliant job of assuming the role of Sackboy’s stately yet silly mentor. Speaking of new, we’re also introduced to a fresh cast of colourful characters, each voiced by some fairly famous faces from the world of British television and theatre. In terms of gameplay, it’ll attract comparisons to Super Mario 3D World and Crash Bandicoot, but the thumping heart of the original series remains intact: the eponymous plaything can still pick up gadgets, grab on to sponge, and jump on bounce pads. Sackboy: A Big Adventure takes the emotive icon in an entirely new direction, as this is a pure platformer rather than a do-it-yourself construction kit. But with the PlayStation 5’s launch, UK developer Sumo Digital has returned to Craftworld – and the results are remarkable. With creator Media Molecule turning its attention to the outrageously ambitious imagination simulation Dreams, it’s been six long years since we saw the smile of Sony’s only knitted hero. Especially with your favourite player 2.Sackboy is too good a character to sit on the sidelines, but for the last six years that’s exactly what the LittleBigPlanet protagonist has done. ![]() Sure, they’re an ease in for younger or less experienced players, but if you fell off it like I did give it another go. But the first few levels really don’t do it justice. It even gets damn challenging if you want to test the power of your sack. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a barrel of laughs. ![]() Throwing my partner around to try to get extra collectibles or in an attempt to cheese a difficult section is almost always funny, especially when I miss. The stage based on Britney Spears Toxic is a particular stand out, and not just because the song is a banger.Īs the stages get a bit more difficult, the slapstick fun of previous Little Big Planet games also comes out in stronger force. Not only do some levels give you cool equipment like jetpacks and boomerangs, but there are full levels very cleverly synced to surprisingly popular music. I really didn’t expect it after the relatively shallow start. New enemies and abilities are added that end up providing a lot more depth. Levels not only get more difficult, but also just more interesting. So stepping back into Sackboy and actually getting further into the world was quite a surprise. It feels like a game made for very young kids. The first few levels don’t do much to get you excited for what’s to come. Sackboy: A Big Adventure’s biggest sin is that it just starts off a bit slow. I’ve come back to it recently, and I need everyone to know, it’s much better than it seems. When friends came over to check out the new console, Sackboy was the game they fell off the fastest. Perhaps especially after the mind blowing little touches in Astro’s Playroom. Playing through the first few levels was fine, but not particularly exciting. ![]() Astro’s Playroom is a joy and comes bundled with the unit, then you have games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales to really seal the deal.īut Sackboy: A Big Adventure also came out, and compared to everything else on offer it felt like an ok at best co-op platformer. When the PS5 released and I miracled my way into grabbing one, there was a small, yet solid launch lineup.
